How to choose your portable air conditioner

Before chasing stock, it helps to know what you want. This guide covers the essentials: how much power you need, which type fits you, and what to watch for so you're not caught out.

How much power: the BTU-per-m² rule

As a quick rule, budget about 100 BTU per m² (more for very sunny rooms or high ceilings). Up to ~20-25 m² an 8,000 BTU (2.0 kW) unit usually suffices; beyond that, up to ~40 m², go for 12,000 BTU (3.5 kW). Oversizing cools in fits and starts; undersizing never gets there.

No-drill split vs monobloc

A classic monobloc is a single box with one hose venting hot air out the window: cheap, but noisier and less efficient. The PortaSplit is a portable split: it separates the compressor (resting in the window) from the indoor unit, so it cools better and far more quietly, with no building work or fixed outdoor unit. For sleeping or for rentals, the no-drill split wins.

What to check before buying

  • Real noise in dB(A): below 40 dB(A) is comfortable for sleeping.
  • Energy class and consumption: look at the cooling mode (A++ is ideal).
  • Heat pump: useful if you'll also use it in the shoulder seasons.
  • Window kit and compatibility with your window type (tilt-turn, sliding).
  • That it's the exact model: there are other Midea monoblocs that aren't the PortaSplit.

FAQ

Does a portable cool as well as a fixed split?+

A portable split like the PortaSplit gets fairly close and is far more efficient and quiet than a monobloc, though a well-sized fixed split is still the ceiling. The portable's advantage is that it needs no building work or installer.

Does it use a lot of power?+

With A++ cooling, consumption is contained for what it cools. Real cost depends on hours of use, how well the home is insulated and the outdoor temperature.
