What to check before you pay
- Domain age. A site created weeks ago selling a product every real retailer is sold out of deserves a second look.
- Company details. A legitimate shop publishes a company name, a company or VAT number and an address. If none appear anywhere, be careful.
- Reviews. If testimonials are written inside the page rather than linking to Trustpilot or Google, they cannot be verified.
- Price. If it is the only site with stock and the price is well above normal, compare before buying.
- Payment. Always pay by card or PayPal, never by bank transfer — a transfer gives you no route to get the money back.
FAQ
Does a new domain mean it's a scam?+
No. It means it's new. Plenty of legitimate shops launch every year. What's a warning sign is the combination: a domain a few weeks old, no company details, unverifiable reviews, and stock of a product the whole market is sold out of.
How do I check the company details?+
Look for the legal notice or terms page. It should name the company, give a registration or VAT number, and an address. A contact form and a Gmail address is not enough for a £900 payment.
What if I've already paid?+
If you paid by card or PayPal, open a dispute with your bank or PayPal as soon as possible. If you paid by bank transfer, contact your bank immediately, though recovery is much harder.
